All Sexual Abuse Assessment and Treatment Service (SAATS) clinicians must complete our initial therapeutic medical and forensic training (ITFT) programme. It’s a required step on the pathway towards becoming accredited.

The “Initial Therapeutic Medical and Forensic Management of Sexual Assault and Non-Fatal Strangulation and/or Suffocation of Adults and Adolescents” training programme – commonly referred to as the ITFT programme – teaches the skills needed for medical examinations for adults affected by sexual assault and non-fatal strangulation and/or suffocation (NFSS).

There are three parts to the ITFT programme. It’s comprised of:

  • online pre-learning – we’ll set you up in our learning management system (LMS) and give you access to the tools and resources you’ll need to complete the first part of the training programme

  • in-person training – you’ll attend face to face training over two days, made up of a combination of practical and theory sessions

  • online post-learning – this part of the programme is also completed online through our LMS.

Once you’ve completed the ITFT programme and are working as a SAATS clinician, you’ll be able to start working towards becoming MEDSAC accredited. You'll also be eligible to attend our annual update conference, Manaaki Tangata.
