National home safety services

21 Oct 2024

Whānau Protect is a service that helps high-risk victims and their children to live free from violence while remaining in their homes. It’s delivered by Women’s Refuge, and supported by the Ministry of Justice.

The nationwide service provides practical safety improvements to a victim’s home, including a monitored safety alarm and home safety improvements, to help keep offenders out of the property. When the alarm is triggered, the police are notified, and the unit activates an audio recording. The recording may be used by police for the purpose of investigation and prosecution against the perpetrator.

Whānau Protect supports people who are currently experiencing repeat family violence that’s likely to cause serious physical injury or death.

The service only accepts online referrals – you can apply for support on the Women’s Refuge website.
